Raila calls for a million man protest

Last updated: 36 minutes ago

Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga has called for a million-man march on Thursday to protest what they called a “civilian coup”.
Leading the party’s 100 MPs-elect, Mr Odinga said the Electoral Commission had presided over a civilian coup by declaring President Mwai Kibaki the Head of State.
They have decided to put off a public rally earlier planned for today at Nairobi’s Uhuru Park, and instead vowed to use peaceful means to force President Kibaki out of office. Today’s rally was styled as a platform for Mr Odinga to address the nation as the President-elect.
The party said they had already issued the requisite three-day notice to the police about the Thursday march, expected to take place in all major towns in the country. Party supporters will wear black bands, cloths and carry twigs only.
“We are law abiding citizens of Kenya who do not want to give anybody an opportunity to claim the laws were ignored. They are now informed that Kenyans will demand back power the ECK had given Mr Kibaki in a civilian coup,” Mr Odinga said.
Addressing journalists at Orange House after an ODM National Executive Committee and Parliamentary Group meeting, Mr Odinga accused the police provoking and killing people in total disregard to the mandate they had given him to be President.
He appealed for peace and calm saying hooliganism and criminal acts would not provide the way forward to the impasse created by ECK chairman Mr Samuel Kivuitu and asked the international community to intervene and save Kenya from losing its glory as Africa’s democratic state.
“We deliberated over weighty issues regarding the elections and rigging that took place. We are pained and saddened that within 48 hours democracy we fought so hard to bring is strangled and killed by a small clique of people,” he said.
He said the country was in a state of mourning and the funeral atmosphere will engulf the peaceful demonstration on Thursday. He said the ECK chairman had acted irresponsibly as though he doesn’t live in the country to provide its citizens with their legally elected “ President”.
Mr Odinga accused Internal security minister Mr John Michuki of using maximum force in the belief that if it sustained for two or three days then Kenyans will give up.
“We will not recognise Kibaki as the President of Kenya and will fight him out of office through peaceful and legal means,” he said.
He however ruled out going to court about an obvious fact and wondered whether the premise of the law had changed for him to prove that he was the winner against the loser.
“If he is not guilty why does he seclude himself in State House at dusk to be sworn in without the media, diplomats, observers and other Heads of States,” he added.

Kibaki being sworn in by Cheif justice Evans Gecheru

ACCEPTANCE SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY HON. MWAI KIBAKI, C.G.H., M.P., PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA FOLLOWING HIS RE-ELECTION TO SERVE A SECOND TERM, STATE HOUSE NAIROBI, 30TH DECEMBER, 2007
Fellow Kenyans,
Following the announcement of the presidential election results by the Electoral Commission of Kenya, I stand before you humbled and grateful for the opportunity you have given me to serve you again as your President for a second five-year term.
I thank all Kenyans who voted in large numbers in these elections. I thank all of you for the trust you have bestowed upon me in renewing my mandate, which I accept with sincere gratitude and humility. I am confident that together, we will succeed in changing our country into a better home for all Kenyans.
The elections were very closely contested. I thank those of our brothers and sisters who voted for me and other presidential candidates for expressing their democratic right and choice. As a democrat, I acknowledge and respect the right of every Kenyan to choose candidates of their choice.
With the elections behind us now, I assure them that as President of Kenya, I will serve everyone equally, irrespective of the person they may have voted for.
I urge all of us to set aside the passions that were excited by the election process, and work together as one people with the single purpose of building a strong, united, prosperous and equitable country.
Fellow Kenyans,
I want to commend my opponents, specifically Honorable Kalonzo Musyoka and Honorable Raila Odinga. They campaigned strongly, and garnered support from across the country. I call on all the political leaders to set aside their differences. Let us all work together to build consensus on issues of national importance including a new Constitution, and any matter that benefits and improves the welfare of our people.
Fellow Kenyans,
We have done our nation proud, and set a good example for the rest of the continent, through the conduct of free and fair elections.
The freedom of choice, the openness and integrity of the electoral process, and the peaceful manner in which we conducted ourselves as people has raised Kenya’s democratic profile throughout the world.
I am particularly pleased that millions of Kenyans in the largest voter turnout seen in our country chose to exercise their democratic right to elect a new team of political leaders. Most notable, is the fact that so many young people have participated in the democratic process for the first time, either as candidates or as voters. These are good developments that testify to the strength of our nation’s democratic culture.
Indeed, I am proud to note that in holding free and fair elections in our country both in the just concluded general elections, and in the referendum two years ago, we have demonstrated to the world that we are politically mature and capable of nurturing and upholding democracy.
I thank the Electoral Commission of Kenya, our security agents, observers and all other stakeholders, for remaining committed to the conduct of honest, orderly and credible elections that have enabled the true verdict of the people to prevail. I call upon all candidates and Kenyans in general to accept the verdict of the people.
With the general election now behind us, it is now the time for healing and reconciliation among all Kenyans. We need to heal the differences that have been created among us, between different communities, regions, and religions.

I urge all of us to set aside the divisive views and opinions we held during the campaign period, and instead embrace one another as brothers and sisters. After all, we belong to one family called Kenya.
On my part as your President, I will personally lead our country in promoting unity, tolerance, peace and harmony among all Kenyans. I appeal to all political and religious leaders to do the same.
As I pledged to Kenyans during the campaigns, I will shortly form a clean hands Government that represents the face of Kenya. The new PNU Government will incorporate the affiliate parties as well as other friendly parties. I also pledge to ensure that our young people and women are fully represented in all public appointments.I wish to announce that we will hold the presidential inauguration ceremony on 7th of January 2008. After these ceremonies, we will start to deliver on the promises and pledges we made in our manifesto so as to build a society with a strong economy, equitable development, and social justice.
I will remain committed to the development of all parts of our country and to ensuring justice and equal treatment of all Kenyans. My Government will be committed to the task of creating and sustaining a prosperous, secure, and equitable future for all Kenyans. In conclusion, fellow Kenyans, you have given us a vote of confidence in the values and principles of freedom, equality, and development that we began five years ago.
You have chosen the leaders you wish to serve you during the next five years. You have given us the agenda for change you wish to see implemented for the next five years. I humbly respect your choices and your agenda.
In return, I ask all of us, and particularly all leaders to embrace a renewed spirit of national unity, respect the peoples’ choice, and maintain peace, law and order. Let us choose to live together in the true democratic spirit of tolerance and mutual respect.
Let us all endeavor to build a society that is in harmony and at peace with itself.
In the last few days, many Kenyans have had a hectic time in preparation for this event. To give all of us deserved rest and to prepare for the New Year celebrations, I declare tomorrow, December 31, 2007, a Public Holiday.
Thank You. God Bless You All. God Bless Kenya

Bravo to Kibaki

Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki casts his vote at his home town in Nyeri, 27 December 2007. Opposition leader Raila Odinga enjoyed a clear lead Friday over Kibaki according to partial, unofficial results as Kenya awaited the result of its tightest ever presidential elections.

bravo to all kenyans u voted for Hon Kibaki , ope kenyans they made right choice to vote 4 Mzee. Kibaki is the man who has taken kenya a step ahead from where former president Moi left it.

i do opeand and trust Kibaki will elect the honest cabinet who are willing to work for kenyans and not themselves.

let all kenyans feel free and know that the country will be back to normal within afew days.

This appeal goes to all kenyans to accept the results of the elections , coz this wat kenyans have been waitn for.

Raila should accept defeat and feel free to work with Presudent Kibaki, he should also appreciate for winning most of the seats in the paliament.

my advice to President kibaki is to appoint a clean cabinet which will never bring him back, and i do hope he has experience to do so.

All lenyans living abroad this is your chance to post ur comments and opinions about Kenya for the coming five years of President kibaki second term.

I’m quite concerned about the terrible coverage by KBC given its natonwide coverage. Anyone listening to radio, how is that coverage? If it’s just as bad then most Kenyans are in the dark about the results, which is just unacceptable.
- Chaos in Kawangware and Jogoo Road.
The ECK briefing just got done.
They released provisional results for the presidential race. Couldn’t type fast enough to catch break down by province, here’s the total
Kivuitu apologized for the delayed results, but basically admitted that they had no clue what was causing the delay and nothing short of the commissioners going to all the delayed constituencies to find out what was going on could give a satisfactory answer. He said that returning officers in those areas are not picking up their phones. He made several references to the fact that people might be cooking the results before submitting them to the ECK, and said that if they delay continues he will announce the results that have been submitted (Raila in the lead - missed the exact numbers but it’s 49% - 45%). He said that there were 51 constituencies that had not submitted their numbers to ECK at KICC for the presidential race and for most of these constituencies there was no good explanation (except places like Kajiado North where there was chaos). He ended the meeting saying that the commissioners were going to have a meeting to decide the way forward.
Didn’t catch all the constituencies but some of them include:
- Masinga- Kajiado North-Kitui West-Gachoka-Garsen-Sotik-Kiambaa-Limuru-Baringo East- Laikipia East- Naivasha-Nakuru Town-Molo- South Mugirango- Bobachi- Nyaribari Chache- Kitutu Chache
This is all disturbing.

First, for all those who took advantage of my time away from the blog to turn the comment section into a space for your tribal-based vitriol - SHAME ON YOU! From reading this blog you should know that I don’t entertain that kind of crap, and my readers have always respected that.
I’ve had to spend half an hour (on a slow connection) deleting comments instead of focusing on updating the results. I do not want to close the comment section because of a few people, especially since majority of the comments have been positive regardless of who the person is supporting, but I will not tolerate that rubbish on my blog. Create your own blog or express yourself on websites that will accommodate non-civil comments - Kenyan Pundit is all about KENYA.
Ggrrr…
OK, on to the latest.
- Tension is high due to the delay in announcing results. Hear there are problems in town and Kibera.
- Footage on KTN right now showing tampering of results in Kamkunji in favor of Kibaki and the PNU candidate - it’s very obvious no matter who you are supporting. I really hope this is an isolated case.
- Latest results - approx Raila 4.05, Kibaki 3.68, Kalonzo 0.67
- 34 constituencies left before official announcement of presidential results by ECK. Constituencies left are Coast 10; Eastern 8; Central 8; Nairobi 5: Rift Valley 3. No prizes for guessing who this tally favors.
MP results (though focus of the media now is on Presidential numbers)
- Kachileba: Poghiso in
- Saboti: Eugene Wamalwa in
- Mosop: David Koech in
- Makadara: Dickson Waithaka in
- Lamu West: Fahim Twaha in

Election 2007 Dec 29 12:30 am update
Posted by Ory Okolloh in kenyaelection07
- For those who are asking - only 3 seats have been announced in Nairobi - Westlands, Langata, and Kasarani. Have no idea what is going on with the rest though violence reported in Kasarani and Kamkunji.
- Current tally of seats: ODM 72, PNU 19, Safina 4, ODM-K 9, MGPK 1, NARC 3, PICK 2, KANU 6, UDM 1, SISI 1, DP 1, NEW FORD-KENYA 2
- Presidential - Raila 51.1%, Kibaki 40.4%
- ECK needs to style up how they present their results - having some guy read each result out is absolutely tedious, why not just have a screen that presents it electronically and provide each TV station with data for their tickers?
- Anxiety increasing over delay, but overall guys on the ground are calm
- Lowest turnout tracked so far is 57% in Funyula
- Slightly less of a third of the vote counted so those who are getting impatient, better get ready to dig in and wait.
MP results:
- Joe Nyagah out
- Imenti South: Murungi in
- Kwanza: Wekesa in
- Matuga violence after Mwakere declared winner
- Mwala: Katuku out
- Subukia: Koigi out
- Kisauni: Joho in, Mwaboza out

- For guys who are asking about Sakuda, no updates as counting has been suspended as I said in my last post due to chaos.

Election results update 12:30 pm Dec 28
Posted by Ory Okolloh in kenyaelection07
Folks this is a historic election by Kenyan standards, regional standards and international standards - I don’t think there is a precedent for the number of incumbents that are going down despite having massive resources behind them and attempts to bribe voters. And I challenge you to find an election in the Western world in recent times where people have come out with such determination, conviction, and a strong sense of civic duty .
I’m very very proud of Kenyan voters and you all should be no matter who you are supporting.
The media has focused on the presidential race and on the tribal nature of the campaign, but the story of the revolution (as I keep repeating, but really it’s worth emphasizing) is at the local level - Kenyans have realized the power of the vote and will no longer be taken for a ride. I think this election will be a watermark as far the maturity of voters and the impact it will have on the next Parliament (now we need to get rid of pensions for one-term MPs), Kenyans want results and CHANGE and not empty talk, and if ODM wins they will have an incredibly difficult time at managing expectations.
I’m so excited (plus I’m loving the fact that the comments left on
Mzalendo over the past year are reflecting in the results…we’re on to something)!
On to the latest results:
- Kajiado North - counting suspended due to electoral misconducted, some ballot boxes not sealed properly and others found empty. Sakuda was losing last night, but Saitoti suddenly started picking up this am.
- Garsen - counting also suspended due to chaos after a helicopter landed at the counting station with 12 unaccompanied ballot boxes. The crowd destroyed the 12 boxes and started going after the boxes that had already been counted, they had to be dispersed with tear gas.
- Kibwezi - Kalembe out
- Budalangi - Ababu Namambwa in
- All Moi sons out. Raymond lost to Luka Kigen.
- Mt Elgon - Kapondi out
- Kulundu out
- Kabete - Muite out, Nguyai in
- Nyakach - Pollins Onyango in
- North Imenti - Mwiraria out
- Sotik - Lorna Labasi in (women doing well in Rift Valley)
- Kipiriri - Kimunya in
- Ntimama in
- Cherangany - Kirwa out
- Belgut - Charles Ketel in
Wah! The people have spoken.

Election results update ECK Briefing 9:00am Dec 28
Posted by Ory Okolloh in kenyaelection07
Other results from TV stations:
- National elections: Raila 64.5%, Kibaki 33.%, Kalonzo 1.7%Western - Raila 68%, Kibaki 31%; Nyanza Raila 90%, Rift Valley Raila 83%, 16% Kibaki; Eatern - Kibaki 61%, Raila 22%, Central Kibaki 98%, Raila 2%; Nairobi Kibaki 49% Raila 42%
- Eldoret South - Peris Chepchumba wins (first female winner to be announced)
- Mathira - Ephraim Maina over Gachagua
- Emgwen - Elijah Lagat
- Kombo officially out to Sambu in Webuye
- Eldama Ravine - Lesonet over Moi
- Rongo - Dalmas Oteino over Ayacko
- Mogotio - Helen Jepekboi
- North Eastern province results trickling in, Raila in the lead
Other observations Nyanza definitely an ODM wave despite unhappiness with the nominations process, end of Ford People as the dominant party in Kisii - ODM losing out due to flawed nominations, Central - wide open unlike Nyanza no 3 piece voting, Safina surprisingly strong.
ECK Briefing was really a waste of time. Provisional results were announced for only 3 constituencies and one of them didn’t even include the MP results. People are starting to get anxious now because they should have tallies from a lot more constituencies and should have been able to have a more substantive briefing this morning. Poor showing from them this morning. They are blaming the high turnout and the need for accuracy.

Election results update (1) 3:00 am Kenya Time
Posted by Ory Okolloh in kenyaelection07
Some MP results via Citizen TV:
- Orengo leading Mwanga in Ugenya.- Sambu leading Kombo in Webuye- Chikati leading Kituyi by slim margin- Ahmed Shakil leading in Kisumu Town East (Kibaki got quite a few votes here).- Olago leading in Kisumu Town West- James Rege leading in Karachuonyo- Kamanda has a very very slim lead over Margaret Wanjiru in Starehe
Kivuitu just got with a press briefing. He said that there were no official results from anywhere yet because of delays in polls opening and other glitches. He apologized and said he believes that the ECK had done the best that they could under the circumstances. He also said that he wants to wait until they have a degree of finality before they announce any results. The next press briefing will be at 8:00 am, and they might announce provisional results from polling stations then but no winners declared. ECK is estimating that a winner will not be declared until Dec 29th.
There was a Q&A session afterwards. George Nyamweya, the PNU spokesperson claimed that ODM is announcing presidential results from about 200 constituencies and are usurping the role of the ECK and wanted Kivuitu to do something about it. Kivuitu refused to get embroiled and said that the ECK will not be a “listening machine” and that Kenyans know better and will be able to discern for themselves.

Let look about the presidential candidate Mr Kalonzo, to my own view kalonzo is just waisting votes for Hon Kibaki. Kalonzo knew that this is not his time but went for embarrasment in the all country. Kalonzo should have joined kibaki and kibaki would campaign for him 2012 . but now he is narrowing kibaki chances .

that wat i feel kalonzo should have done for Mzee Kibaki.

2 months ago: Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki (R) waves upon arrival with opposition leader Uhuru Kayntta (L) and Vice President Moody Awori (C) at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi September 30, 2007. Kibaki on Sunday formally launched his quest for a second term at the helm of east Africa's economic powerhouse, amid poll ratings putting him in second and disarray in his election coalition.

Saitoti in shock

Education minister Prof George Saitoti was stoned and chased away from Ololaiser Secondary School after violence erupted over† alleged rigging.
Irate mob stoned the minister as he stepped out of the counting hall moments after he stormed in to protest that his agents were being intimidated by supporters of his rivals.
Police shielded Saitoti as his bodyguards shot in the air to scare the mob. Police threw teargas canisters forcing members of the public and some journalists to scamper for safety as Saitoti was whisked away.
The incident occurred moments after Saitoti’s younger brother, a Leposo was beaten up at the tallying centre and a computer he was using confiscated by the public.
Trouble started at the tallying centre after some presiding officers returned unsealed ballot boxes, heightening suspicion that they could have been tampered with.
"We can not accept this, look, the ballot boxes are opened, they are unsealed. We cannot count
on this for any fairness," protested ODM parliamentary candidate, Rev Ole Sakuda.
Some of the unsealed ballot boxes were stuffed with personal effects such as lesos, sweaters and used stationery.
After examining them, an ECK official called his bosses who advised him to call off the tallying until as the electoral body decides on the next move.
Before chaos, erupted Sakuda was leading with 9,412 with the minister trailing†by 4127 votes from about 40 stations tallied.

Big Question!!!!!!!

kenya may be introduced to second national after Swahili if Ogwambo win the general elections, which might be Luo from the president contestant mr Omolo.

most of the kenyans within the country and abroad are worried wat will happen if mr ogwambo wins the election . the Big que is this will Ondingasim sologan from Nyanza go to statehouse, will he introduce Majimbo and Prime minister has he promised the citezen, lets wait and see .

Kenya may suffer high inflation as results of Raila win let ope for the best. whatever the kenyans have decided we can't ignore their right of voting for the person they think will bring change.

What will happen to uncle Moody by loosing his home seat, the old mzee might loose us very soon due to stress . Uncle Moody may God give you strength to see the goververnance of Raila if he wins.

What will happen to provinces like Eastern, Central and other pronvince where he is loosing against Hon Kibaki, if Raila wins let wair and see? hope their will be no descrimanation due to tribe or the place and colour. let hope Raila will follow Mzee Kibaki footsteps and do more good and carry from where mzee will hve left.

Kibaki might be a opposition side again after his last five years, will he cope with the new cabinet? let wait and see. Kenya mpyia na mabo mapyi. all the best to the one who wins.

May god help kenyans leaders to have good vision about the Keyans and not to benefit the and their people only but the all country.

Ida Odinga first lady ????????? figure this out, kenyans. hopeOdinga will fulfill his promises to all Kenyans .

Think about this if Raila wins and appointing Kibaki has Finance minister, would Kibaki agree to the offer or not to me Kibaki would reject the offer coz it may look as an insult to old Mzee.

President Kibaki losing Kenya vote: media
Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki is trailing his main rival
December 28, 2007, 12:15
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki trailed his main rival today in the race to lead east Africa's biggest economy for the next five years, according to early tallies by local media.Partial results from three main television stations all gave opposition challenger Raila Odinga - the son of a nationalist hero - a strong lead over his former ally, although a separate exit poll put Kibaki ahead in what many had forecast would be Kenya's closest ever election. Were Odinga to win, this would make Kibaki the first of Kenya's three sitting presidents to be ousted by the ballot box in the 44 years since the end of British colonial rule.Unofficial TV results releasedThe unofficial results by the TV channels were compiled from tallies at counting centres. The latest, from KTN at 12.15pm (0915 GMT), gave Odinga 1,862,573 votes to 1,179,271 for Kibaki - representing about a third of ballots believed cast. About 14 million Kenyans were eligible to vote, although turnout is expected to have been between 8 and 10 million. As official counts slowly reached a Nairobi conference centre ringed by armed guards, the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) said provisional results would be announced throughout today, but that the process could stretch into tomorrow.Officials had earlier given the outcome from just two of Kenya's 210 constituencies. One chose Odinga and the other picked the president, both by large majorities in a reflection of the country's deeply entrenched Kenyan tribalism. The ECK said turnout looked to be the highest since multiparty politics was reintroduced in 1992. International observers said yesterday's voting had gone smoothly, despite sporadic violence and allegations of rigging by both sides. - Reuters

Voting under way in Kenya

All but one opinion poll since September have put Odinga, left, ahead of Kibaki [Reuters]

Voters are turning out in large numbers in Kenya despite fears of violence, fanned by the mob killings in the poll campaign's closing stages of at least three policemen.

The officers in the east African nation's opposition heartland were accused of taking part in a plan to rig Thursday's general election in favour of Mwai Kibaki, the president.

Ten other officers were hurt in western Nyanza province, homeland of Raila Odinga, the challenger and opposition leader, the authorities said on Wednesday.

He held a narrow lead over Kibaki in opinion polls before the vote, expected to be Kenya's closest ever.

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons in Nairobi said that there were queues more than one kilometre long to the polling stations.

"It is chaotic. There are not enough polling stations to go around and there are too many people," he said.

"But many people here say that they have never seen numbers like this. That people are energised they feel so strongly that they want to vote."

Simmons said that it is likely that polling stations will stay open two hours longer than expected at the recommendation of EU election monitors.

Some 14 million of Kenya's 36 million people are eligible to vote in the election. Official results are expected from Friday.

Local broadcaster KTN and Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had accused the government of disguising police as party agents to carry out fraud at polling stations.

When buses carrying officers arrived in different locations of Nyanza from Nairobi, crowds responded angrily and threw stones, accusing them of a plot to rig the polls, witnesses said.

"They started attacking them. One died on the spot, another on the way to hospital," police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said of the fracas late on Tuesday in one location, Mbita.

The other confirmed death was on Wednesday morning.

A media source in Nyanza, who asked not to be named, said there were in fact four deaths, while an election official told Reuters, on condition of anonymity, nine were feared killed.

Presidential denial

With Thursday's presidential and parliamentary vote seen as a big test of Kenya's democratic credentials in a continent plagued by election controversies, Kibaki denied the rigging accusations and urged Kenyans to stay calm.

"Let us all embrace peace and let fair play, honesty and democracy prevail," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

And a government spokesman accused the media of fomenting the violence by peddling propaganda.

"The mobs killing people in Nyanza are doing so after ... alarmist and unsubstantiated rigging media claims," Alfred Mutua said.

trying to rig the vote in Kibaki's favour [AFP]
The spokesman said anti-police violence was spreading.

"In Nyanza, policemen are being hunted and killed ... We are shocked that people have set up road blocks and are removing people not from there from buses."

One Nyanza resident, who identified himself only as Peter, confirmed he had been among a crowd attacking officers.

"Over 20 administration police officers in civilian clothes arrived late on Tuesday in Migori on two buses. We immediately suspected them and started beating them," he told Reuters.

KTN has been running images of civilian buses taking police out of a Nairobi training college under cover of darkness.

It quoted sources saying the police were stripped of usual ID and given letters accrediting them as agents of Kibaki's Party of National Unity (PNU) to access voting stations.

Odinga said "they were issued each with 1,000 pre-marked ballot papers to be stuffed by them".

"I've appealed to President Kibaki to prevail on his agents against election rigging acts that could plunge this country into bloodshed."

Kibaki said his government had deployed 65,000 security personnel across Kenya to ensure security and "we should desist from harassing or obstructing them".

Big Men's rule

In 2002, the country experienced a rarity in African politics: the broadly peaceful transition of power from one "big man" ruler, Daniel arap Moi, to another, Kibaki.

Since coming to power in a coalition of big men the economy has had a strong five per cent annual growth on average and Kibaki has introduced free primary education.

He also has the support of his economically powerful Kikuyu tribe, Kenya's largest.

But while Kenya is east Africa's economic powerhouse, more than half the population live in poverty and Kibaki is accused of not effectively tackling issues such as corruption and poor infrastructure.

Odinga emerged after the anti-Kibaki orange
movement splintered [Reuters]
Many say he has an image problem, declining all media interviews on the campaign trail.

The big men allied to him when he swept to power broke away and their Orange movement hit the president with a landslide defeat in a constitutional referendum three years ago.

And Odinga has emerged as the front-runner after the orange movement splintered and the big men went their separate ways.

Odinga has the ardent backing of his western Luo community, but has also garnered support from other ethnic groups who think the Kikuyus have had it too good under Kibaki.

All but one of the opinion polls since September have put Odinga, a 62-year-old businessman and former political prisoner, a few points ahead of Kibaki, 76.

Kibaki has said he will step down, and retire to his highland farm, if he loses. But analysts believe those around him might not be so willing to relinquish power.
